SUMMARY:Coding & Cupcakes September: Game Development 1 Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Coding & Cupcakes September: Game Development 1 Workshop \nJoin us for our monthly coding series\, Coding & Cupcakes. Parents and daughters are invited to attend sessions to learn about code and bond while working on programming projects together. Our mission is to get girls excited about code at a young age and to dispel any notion that coding isn’t for girls. Did we mention there are cupcakes\, yummy\, yummy\, cupcakes! \nIn this workshop attendees will learn to build their own text-based game using tools like Python and Mu Editor! \nPython is a high-level programming language designed to be easy to read and simple to implement. \nMu is a Python editor for beginning programmers\, designed to make the learning experience more pleasant. It gives students the ability to experience success early on\, which is important anytime you’re learning something new. Most programming tools are written by developers for developers and aren’t well-suited for beginning programmers\, regardless of their age. Mu\, however\, is different written by a teacher for students. \nThere will be lots of guidance and support for those with little to no coding experience so come join the Coding & Cupcakes fun! \n\nOne ticket per parent/adult chaperone.\nOne ticket per daughter.\nNo coding experience necessary.\nOne Wifi-enabled laptop between each mother and daughter is required.\nThe minimum age requirement is the ability to read\, type\, and use a mouse.\nDelicious cupcakes from Sweet Petites KC will be provided for coding fuel!\nPlease review Kansas City Women in Technology’s Code of Conduct.\n\nDads\, we love you and have expanded what was previously a mother & daughter event to father & daughter teams too! It will be a fun\, easy introduction to coding\, so please encourage the ladies in your life to attend. \nDo you need financial assistance to attend? Email us at codingandcupcakes-team@kcwomenintech.org \nIf you are unable to attend\, you must cancel 48 hours prior to the event to receive a refund! \nFAQs\nHow does registration work?  \nRegister your daughter for one ticket\, choose between bringing a laptop or having one provided for you at the event. Before checking out\, you must also register for one parent/adult chaperone ticket. \nIf you are a chaperone and you’d like to bring several girls or attend the event with another parent/daughter pair\, our form does accommodate that by allowing you to specify the quantity of daughter tickets and parent/adult chaperone tickets during registration. \nAre there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event? \nThe minimum age requirement is the ability to use a mouse\, as well as basic reading and computer typing skills. There is a worksheet provided for the parent/chaperone and daughter to work through\, with mentors on hand to assist with the more complex topics. \nWhat are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event? \nVMLY&R is located in a terminal of the Charles B. Wheeler Airport in downtown Kansas City.  There is ample parking in front. \nWhat do I need to bring into the event? \nEach girl should have one wi-fi enabled laptop\, a power cord and mouse. Laptops are not provided for this session. \nDo I have to bring my printed ticket to the event? \nNo\, we do paperless check-in at the event. \nI have food allergies/dietary restrictions. Can special cupcakes be ordered to meet my food allergies/dietary restrictions? \nUnfortunately\, at this time we are unable to meet any food allergies or dietary restrictions with the provided cupcakes. We apologize for any inconvenience. \nWhat’s the refund policy? \nRefunds must be requested 48 hours before the event. \nWhat is the workshop’s cancellation policy? \nEach workshop requires a minimum of 3 paid registrations by the Tuesday of the week the workshop is to be held.  While we love holding our workshops and inspiring young girl programmers\, we do reserve the right to postpone a workshop if the need arises. If the workshop is postponed and you have paid for a ticket\, we will notify you and issue a refund. We apologize for any inconvenience. \nI am a Mom and I might want to check out an event like this for myself. Do you have an event like this for adults? \nYes\, we do! If you’re a woman looking to attend a workshop solo and learn how to code\, check out our companion series made just for you! Coding & Cocktails. \nI am a parent with a son at home who is interested in an event like this. Do you have an event similar to this where he can attend? \nYes\, we do! If you are parent with a boy interested in attending a workshop and learning to code\, check out our companion series made for him! CoderDoJoKC. \nWhat is Coding & Cupcakes? \nCoding and Cupcakes is a monthly program focused on getting girls excited about coding at a young age and to dispel any notion that coding isn’t for girls\, ultimately contributing to Kansas City Women in Tech’s mission of helping to grow the number of women in technology careers in Kansas City. \nHow can I contact the organizer with any questions I might have? \nEmail us at codingandcupcakes-team@kcwomenintech.org
