SUMMARY:Coding & Cupcakes | October | Jewelbots Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our monthly coding series\, Coding & Cupcakes. Parents and daughters are invited to attend sessions to learn about code and bond while working on programming projects together. Our mission is to get girls excited about code at a young age and to dispel any notion that coding isn’t for girls. Did we mention there are cupcakes\, yummy\, yummy\, cupcakes!\nIn this workshop attendees will learn to program robotic bracelets called Jewelbots using C++ and the Arduino IDE. \nJewelbots are bluetooth-enabled smart bracelets and are the first developed social coding toy. The best way for kids to learn new skills is by working together. The Jewelbots curriculum makes it easy to guide kids into making their own discoveries\, building confidence and of course learning to code. \nC++ is a high-level programming language that is now used to write applications for nearly every available platform. Compared to most previous languages\, C++ is easier to read\, more flexible\, and more efficient at using memory. Because of the power and flexibility of the language\, most software programs today are written in C++. \nArduino IDE (Integrated Development Environment) is a cross-platform application that is used to write and upload programs (code) to Arduino compatible boards (example: the Jewelbot). \nThe Jewelbot is connected to a computer via a USB port\, where it ‘talks’ with the Arduino IDE. The user writes the code in the Arduino IDE that will tell the Jewelbot what to do (example: flash yellow\, flash blue\, flash red and finally buzz)\, the finished code then gets uploaded to the Jewelbot which either executes the code immediately or only when certain variables are met. \nDidn’t quite follow that breakdown? That’s ok! That is what this workshop is for! There will be lots of guidance and support for those with little to no coding experience so come join the Coding & Cupcakes fun! \n• One ticket per parent/adult chaperone. \n• One ticket per daughter. \n• No coding experience necessary. \n• One wifi-enabled laptop between each mother and daughter is required. \n• The minimum age requirement is the ability to read\, type\, and use a mouse. \n• Delicious cupcakes from Sweet Petites KC will be provided for coding fuel! \n• Please review Kansas City Women in Technology’s Code of Conduct. \nDads\, we love you and have expanded what was previously a mother & daughter event to father & daughter teams too! It will be a fun\, easy introduction to coding\, so please encourage the ladies in your life to attend. \n

It gives students the ability to experience success early on\, which is important anytime you’re learning something new. Most programming tools are written by developers for developers and aren’t well-suited for beginning programmers\, regardless of their age. Mu\, however\, is different written by a teacher for students. \nThere will be lots of guidance and support for those with little to no coding experience so come join the Coding & Cupcakes fun! \n\nOne ticket per parent/adult chaperone.\nOne ticket per daughter.\nNo coding experience necessary.\nOne Wifi-enabled laptop between each mother and daughter is required.\nThe minimum age requirement is the ability to read\, type\, and use a mouse.\nDelicious cupcakes from Sweet Petites KC will be provided for coding fuel!\nPlease review Kansas City Women in Technology’s Code of Conduct.\n\nDads\, we love you and have expanded what was previously a mother & daughter event to father & daughter teams too! It will be a fun\, easy introduction to coding\, so please encourage the ladies in your life to attend. \nDo you need financial assistance to attend? We apologize for any inconvenience. \nWhat’s the refund policy? \nRefunds must be requested 48 hours before the event. \nWhat is the workshop’s cancellation policy? \nEach workshop requires a minimum of 3 paid registrations by the Tuesday of the week the workshop is to be held.  While we love holding our workshops and inspiring young girl programmers\, we do reserve the right to postpone a workshop if the need arises. If the workshop is postponed and you have paid for a ticket\, we will notify you and issue a refund. We apologize for any inconvenience. \nI am a Mom and I might want to check out an event like this for myself. Do you have an event like this for adults? \nYes\, we do! If you’re a woman looking to attend a workshop solo and learn how to code\, check out our companion series made just for you! Coding & Cocktails. \nI am a parent with a son at home who is interested in an event like this. Do you have an event similar to this where he can attend? \nYes\, we do! If you are parent with a boy interested in attending a workshop and learning to code\, check out our companion series made for him! CoderDoJoKC. \nWhat is Coding & Cupcakes? \nCoding and Cupcakes is a monthly program focused on getting girls excited about coding at a young age and to dispel any notion that coding isn’t for girls\, ultimately contributing to Kansas City Women in Tech’s mission of helping to grow the number of women in technology careers in Kansas City. \nHow can I contact the organizer with any questions I might have? \nEmail us at codingandcupcakes-team@kcwomenintech.org

SUMMARY:Coding & Cupcakes: Kansas City Kids Conference
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the third annual Kansas City Kids Conference this summer! This fun and mentor-led conference is designed just for elementary\, middle\, and early high school students to explore their interest in technology. \nAs part of the Kansas City Developer Conference\, your student can attend free tech programs such as Kansas City Women in Technology’s popular CoderDojoKC and Coding & Cupcakes. \nWe will have a maker space with DIY wearable tech\, paper circuits and conductive thread. \nWe will have a whole host of focused sessions such as: \n\nGame-building with Bloxels\nLego robotics\nInteractive audio with Makey Makey\nSpheros\nOzobots\nBristlebots…\n\n… And we are excited to include other possible advanced special sessionsthat touch on Artificial Intelligence\, Minecraft mods and Pokemon Raspberry Pi. \nMany but not all sessions will be best experienced with a laptop computer or tablet. We will have a limited number of laptops and tablets available on a first-come\, first-served basis in person on the day. If you are able to bring your own laptop or tablet\, please do. \nWhether your student is new to coding or has been involved in coding classes for years\, Kansas City Kids Conference offers beginner and advanced projects to keep your student learning this summer. \nFAQs \nI am a monthly attendee of CoderDojoKC or Coding & Cupcakes. How will this session be different? \nWe will run CoderDojoKC and Coding & Cupcakes as a series of mini sessions throughout the conference\, rather than as continuous sessions. Your student is welcome to stay with us the whole time and keep working on their projects. But you also have the opportunity to explore many other sessions at the conference. Though we will have plenty of seats in the CoderDojoKC and Coding & Cupcaked sessions\, you are not reserving a CoderDojoKC or Coding & Cupcakes seat with your conference ticket. \nThis month’s Coding & Cupcakes session will involve building websites by writing HTML\, CSS and JavaScript. \nWhat are my parking options? \nWe recommend the Barney Allis parking garage\, located adjacent to the conference center. \nWhat should I bring into the event? \nPlease bring a laptop or tablet if you have one available. Not all of our activities require a device\, and we do have a limited number of devices available to borrow on a first-come\, first-served basis in person on the day. If you need a loaner laptop at an activity but they are all in use\, please let our volunteers know and we will reserve one for you in the next available session. \nYou are welcome to bring snacks. Lunch will be provided. \nDo parents need to stay the entire time? \nIf your child is under 13 years old\, please make sure that you have an adult attending throughout. \nDo I have to bring my printed ticket to the event? \nNo. We can look you up by name. But a printed ticket with QR code can help speed check-in. \nIs it ok if the name on my ticket or registration doesn’t match the person who attends? \nYes. But for the sake of our demographic data\, please answer signup questions as the student attending.
